South Coast Botanic Garden

South Coast Botanic Garden, located in Los Angeles, CA, is a botanical garden containing more than 2,500 plant species. The property contains a public garden and nursery, a commercial wholesale nursery, two demonstration gardens, a children's garden, and a library.

South Coast Botanic Garden is famous for its collection of camellias and California native plants. The Camellia Collection, established in 1976, holds the largest number of named species and cultivars in the world. The garden also contains over 100 other collections, including succulents; herbs; perennials; cacti; agaves; cycads; semi-desert plants; palms; bamboos; and fan-palm trees.

The garden's Heal the Bay demonstration garden is an environmental education outreach program that demonstrates how coastal native plant species can provide natural solutions to serious soil erosion problems typically caused by destructive landscaping practices such as over-irrigation, bare soil exposure, and lack of vegetation.

South Coast Botanic Garden Attractions

The demonstration gardens include the Hillside Garden — a xeric dryland garden; the Historic Period Gardens — Victorian herb and vegetable gardens; and McEvoy Ranch — a rural heritage farm.

The children's garden has a butterfly pavilion, a stream exhibit with live fish and frogs, and a water-wheel maze. The botanic library holds over 10,000 scientific journals from around the world.

South Coast Botanic Garden contains several historic buildings, including the McEvoy Ranch House, which is used for special events.

McEvoy Ranch House South Coast Botanic Garden was once a part of the historic Rancho Guadalasca Spanish land grant.

South Coast Botanic Garden is a non-profit organization supported by memberships, donations, and government support. The botanical garden has been designated as a “Celebration of Landscape Excellence” by the American Society of Landscape Architects.

The nursery sells established plants and bare rootstock, as well as lawn grasses for California. The nursery also offers gardening classes.

South Coast Botanic Garden has lots of facilities including a nursery, a library, several gardens (including a butterfly garden, an English country garden, and children's area), an event center for celebrations like weddings, birthday parties, or business meetings.

The botanic garden has beautiful landscapes with fountains and patios; spectacular floral displays; many exotic species of plants; lakeside trails; educational activities related to the garden's vegetation; it's a beautiful landmark to visit with family or friends.

The whole place is well maintained and very clean, the staff is friendly and helpful, the gift shop offers a lot of unique items you won't find anywhere else. Definitely worth a visit -- The prices are reasonable too.
